On the far side of this pit, plant is still on site, chewing away at what was once farmland. The pale scar in the middle of the frame shows where excavation continues. One result is that the 1:50,000 map is substantially out of date - though the 1:25,000 sheet shows the present situation reasonably accurately. The view here is roughly south-east. Dist:0.4km<br/>The grass embankment in the background is the south west corner of Wraysbury Reservoir, the buildings in the foreground are used to store maintenance equipment and the sheep are part of a much larger flock used to keep the grass banks under control. The M25 runs along the eastern bank of the reservoir for about a mile and the flock can often be seen there.

Dist:0.5km<br/>Much of this grid-square is occupied by gravel workings - as is the case in a number of adjacent squares. This is a view from the north-west corner of the square, looking roughly south along the shore of the pit shown in [[2315033]]. Much of the area seen to be under water in this shot is shown on the 1:25,000 OS sheet as dry land - the 1:50,000 sheet shows the situation more accurately. Gravel extraction continues, chewing into farmland to the south-east. A number of these pits are now managed by angling interests. The scrub and overgrown ditches between the pools provide habitat for all manner of wildlife, while the open water attracts large numbers of wintering wildfowl. Dist:0.6km<br/>From Douglas Lane, Wraysbury, a right of way leads north-east into an area of flooded gravel pits. A pedestrian level-crossing takes the path across the Waterloo-Windsor railway line. This is the view in the 'up' direction, towards Staines and London.

In this and adjacent grid-squares, narrow necks of land remain between the flooded gravel pits. Scrubby vegetation - dense in summer - extends to the water's edge. The area is accessible on foot from Wraysbury (to the south) and Horton (to the north). This sequence of images continues with [[2315340]]

Dist:0.8km<br/>Colne Brook just before it turns south. There are extensive flooded gravel workings in this area which restricts access and the place has quite a remote feel to it despite being less than a kilometre from the M25.
