The lake is a murky brown after the recent rainfall. Only a few days ago it was frozen solid!

Situated off the main woods path, this area is slightly creepy. There is evidence of old buildings, covered with ivy and steep sided drops down to murky, still water. I don't know if this area was once quarried, but it certainly has that feel to it. I took a photo last summer that was rejected as it was simply too dark to see any features due to the leafy canopy. This time the mosses and lichens can be clearly seen.

Dist:0.1km<br/>Seconds earlier a large heron was stood stock still on the ice. Quite a surreal scene! Sadly, he flew away before I could photograph him. Passers by couldn't resist the urge to test the ice by throwing sticks onto the lake.

Dist:0.1km<br/>The lake was once in the grounds of Withybush house but is now accessed via a trading estate next to the airfield. A easy public walk has been provided around the lake and despite the unprepossessing surroundings it is a pleasant naturual enclave with abundant wildlife. In the past there may have been fish ponds in this area.

Dist:0.1km<br/>May, and the Rhododendrons are in full bloom. The lake and woods are all that remain of the grand house and grounds built in the 17th century and lived in by the well known Owen and Phelps families to name a few. The old house was used as a hospital before being demolished. Too much Laurel and Rhodies were planted and are now plant pests.

Dist:0.2km<br/>The willow and alder carr here accounts for the name which has also been given to the nearby airfield and hospital just north of Haverfordwest. Normally the water level would be higher but it has been a very dry spring.
