Winterborne Stickland is first and foremost a working village. Its many thatched houses are interspersed with more modern buildings which have mellowed with the years into a harmonious whole.

The faults of the lime tree is a tendency to hide its lower trunk in a mass of side shoots and burrs as here where it has caused the trunk to become gnarled and knobbled. Normally its bark is smooth, grey and stringy, and birds sometimes strip the bark as a nesting material. The strong bark fibres were once used by gardeners for tying bundles. The creamy white timber is firm, easily carved and very stable. The sculptor and carver Grinling Gibbons (1648-1720) used it extensively. It is also used for hat blocks, shoe trees and piano keys. The stately lime tree is more common in avenues and large estates, and in town and city streets. The lime's attractions include its ability to grow quickly to a great height, a pleasing mid-green foliage, and a tolerance of repeated clipping. Its faults are a tendency to hide its lower trunk in a mass of side shoots and burrs, and to become infested by foliage feeding aphids.

Under an ancient lime tree near the church stands the base of the Medieval village cross, which was until recently hidden under the road surface. In 1977 it was excavated and mounted on a block of Purbeck stone to commemorate Queen Elizabeth II Silver Jubilee. The cross was probably erected in the early 15th century by the holders of the Manor of Stickland, which was at that time the Abbey at Milton.

Dist:0.1km<br/>Over the porch is an unusual double sundial. Sundials or sun clocks are considered to be the oldest known device for the measurement of time and one of the most ancient scientific instruments. The oldest known true sundial was built around 1500BC in Egypt. Shaped like a letter 'L' the length of the shadow cast by the vertical leg along the horizontal leg indicated the time. The Romans perfected the horizontal sundial we know today and invented portable travelling versions.
