The extra NHS buildings will mar the view, and this has been offset by the landscaping that can be seen in the photograph. The extended services will also cause the traffic in Cottingham to increase.

Dist:0.3km<br/>An octagonal brick tower which was once part of "Cottingham Castle", a manor house owned by Thomas Thompson which stood here until the late 19th century (the actual castle or fortified manor at Cottingham, recorded in 1170 and also known as Baynard's Castle, was further east between Northgate and Hallgate). Castle Hill Hospital would later cover most of the site of Thompson's manor house, a foundation stone being laid by King George V in the new hospital administration building on 26th June 1914. http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/644354 Two days later Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the throne of Austro-Hungarian empire, was assassinated in Sarajevo in Bosnia, an event which marked the start of the First World War.

A large foundation stone east of the front door arches in the outside wall of the administration building bears the following inscription: "THIS STONE WAS LAID FROM THE CITY HALL, HULL, BY ELECTRICITY, BY HIS MOST GRACIOUS MAJESTY THE KING ON THE 26TH JUNE 1914" Two days after King George V took part in this ceremony Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the throne of Austro-Hungarian empire, was assassinated in Sarajevo in Bosnia, an event which marked the start of the First World War.
