Dist:0.8km west<br/>The distribution centre and warehouse at Whitwood Common Lane which now belongs to Tibbett and Britten, was originally built for Elida Gibbs Ltd, as a distribution centre for toiletries products made at their factories in Leeds (toothpaste, shampoo, deodorant, etc). It was built in 1978 and became fully operational in 1979. In the mid 1980's the site was sold to Tibbett and Britten.
At the time of this photograph there were very few other industrial buildings in the area, which is now heavily built up.

Dist:0.8km west<br/>The remains of an 11th century motte and bailey fortification, long reputed be just that, but written off by 20th century archaeologists as a mound of colliery spoil. However, excavations in 2007 confirmed its medieval origins and showed it to be constructed in the same way as the motte at Hastings Castle.

Dist:0.9km west<br/>Built in the 19th century to load coal from Whitwood and Altofts collieries, the wharf fell into disuse when the pits closed in the late 1960s. It was then refurbished and reopened in the early 21st century to unload aggregates for a new concrete mixing plant.

Scandalously, Wakefield Council have given a housing developer permission to flatten this fine building and replace it with an estate of dreary 'executive' houses. Philistines all of them.
