Dist:0.4km<br/>Taken from the point at which the tramway crossed what is now the A52, this is the trackbed looking towards the top of the inclined plane down to Froghall Wharf. This was the third tramway linking Froghall and Caldon Quarries, engineered by William Jessop and opened in 1804. It was itself superseded in 1847, but its route is clearly visible in many locations.

Dist:0.4km<br/>The formation of Jessop's 1804 Caldon Tramway above Whiston, where it follows the side of the hill along a ledge which can be made out just this side of the hedge. Behind the camera, the formation crosses the A52 main road into a cutting and under a bridge, before being lost under a modern golf course for some distance.

Dist:0.4km<br/>The inscription over the large window reads "Primitive Methodist Centenary Church 1907 1908". The centenary being the foundation of Primitive Methodism only 30 km away on [[SJ8557]] Mow Cop in 1807. Not to be confused with [[111780]]/[[112012]].

Dist:0.4km<br/>Jessop's 1804 Caldon Tramway rounds a hillside before recrossing the main road at Whiston. The trackbed shows many typical early railway construction features, notably the use of drystone embankments in places. The rather more modern Moneystone Quarry works are visible in the distance to the RHS.

Dist:0.4km<br/>The gravity operated tramway was originally built to carry limestone from the quarries at Caldon Low (4 miles to the west) to the canal and lime kilns at Froghall Wharf. It was abandoned in the 1920s.

Dist:0.6km<br/>This bridge, which takes the footpath to Foxt over Shirley Brook, has a mysterious second arch. This may have been part of the water management for the Cupola Mill, which used to stand further down the valley, near Froghall Wharf.

Dist:0.7km<br/>The milepost stands beside the A52 and is one of a series of this style of milepost along the road. For a wider view [[1879740]] Milestones/posts did not come into general use until the Turnpike Act of 1766 made them compulsory on turnpike roads, these roads were built by private enterprise under licence from the Government and maintained by tolls on those who used them. Before this Act milestones were put up occasionally, often as charitable acts and commemorations. Many Turnpike Act stones still exist. They are usually 2-3 ft high, with the initial letter or abbreviation of the nearest market town show on two faces, and the distance from it.

Dist:0.8km<br/>This is the terminus of the Caldon Canal, although once it used to reach to Uttoxeter. The narrowboat Birdswood operates trips along this beautiful stretch of canal. The wharf building houses a shop selling drinks and snacks.

Dist:0.8km<br/>The lock and lower basin at Froghall were originally part of the Uttoxeter Canal, an extension of the Caldon Canal. After 70 years of dereliction, the basin was restored and re-opened in July 2005. The original route to Uttoxeter continued to the bottom right.
