Dist:0.5km<br/>The old course of the River Tees is still well defined as it does a large meander around what is now Teesside Retail Park. As can be seen the creek is tidal and must have been a lot wider. It was cut off when the river was straightened with the digging of the Old Cut in the nineteenth century. The cut was only 220 yards but it saved the sailing vessels negotiating the large loop around Mandale Bottoms. Just upstream of here Stainsby Beck flows into the creek which has been channelled during the construction of the A19 seen beyond.

Dist:0.5km<br/>The arcane layout of the service roads in Teesside Park makes it necessary to have a landmark visible for some distance in order to locate the cinema complex and find a way in to the extensive carpark. The tower is directly adjacent to the A66, so is also a form of advertising. However, the area it overlooks is a bleak and unforgiving place to have to stand and wait for your kids for half an hour when films fail to finish by the advertised time. Whilst the cinemas operate (as they legally must) a non-smoking policy inside the building, anyone waiting outside finds themselves constantly breathing toxic fumes from refugee addicts who rarely have the courtesy to take their habit downwind of the entrance.

Dist:0.6km<br/>Unlike the dull concrete facades of the large majority of retail outlets in Teesside Park, Morrisons supermarket is purpose built to project the corporate image, and proves to be an architectural highspot. Inevitably, though, whatever the architectural merits of such buildings, they are destined to be mere backdrops to interminable vistas of parked cars and form iconic representations of that dreariest of activities, shopping.
