Dist:0.3km<br/>This crosshead sits atop a shaft and base in a small walled enclosure by the roadside in Wheston. It is in fine condition, depicting the Crucifixion on the visible side and the Virgin Mary on the opposite face. Christopher Drewry in his book 'Wormhill - The History of a High Peak Village' speculates that this cross may date back to the original monks of Monk's Dale. The community was formed in 1108 when the Manor of Lenton near Nottingham founded a grange and chapel in the dale and it is possible that following the Reformation, the Catholic Alleyn family of Wheston may have sought to preserve this emblematic relic.
