Dist:0.9km<br/>This photo shows the view east along Box Tunnel and shows the inner lining. Someone added "an Interesting anecdote with regard to this Tunnel, built by Isambard Kingdom Brunel, which might be interesting to viewers of the picture: April 9th is Brunel's birthday, and if you stand at the western end and look through the tunnel at dawn you can actually see the sun rise through the eastern end. It was engineered perfectly straight". There seems to be a difference of opinion on this as it is also said that it shines through on the 7th.

Dist:0.9km<br/>This photo shows the eastern portal of Box Tunnel. If you look closely you will see the size of the original entrance, also there is a further reduction in size about 100 feet into the tunnel, this was done so as not to scare people in the 1840's. The secondary entrance on the right takes a railway line into Tunnel Quarry that was started about the same time as Box Tunnel (1836). Tunnel Quarry was taken over by the War Department during the 1930's and was converted into one of the largest underground ammunition depots in the world (approx 1,250,000 sq ft. of storage space), these tracks run for over a 1/4 of a mile and end in an underground station with 2 platforms each 200 metres long.

Dist:1.0km<br/>View across the field towards Spring Quarry boilerhouse chimney, the large brick building is Spring West, Main Substation. During the Second World War Thorney Pits was full of temporary housing but all that remains now are the houses on the left of the picture.
