Dist:0.6km<br/>Lancashire boilers burning coal on chain grates. The firing aisle is covered but the rest of the boilers are in the open air with insulation over the top of the shells. Colliery boiler houses were not always the tidiest of environments. At this time these boilers were out of use and steam was being raised in a pair of oil fired boilers out of shot.

Dist:0.6km<br/>First off, I must apologise that this is less than good. The original was dark and equalising it to improve it has revealed defects in the emulsion. The engine was a unique W & J Galloway horizontal duplex with drop valve cylinders 40" bore x 72" stroke and of about 3000 horsepower. Built 1923 and scrapped in 1981 (the drum was retained and driven by a motor). The driver was in the elevated cabin on the left and the circular dial showed where the cages where in the shaft, with final landing by lining up marks on the drum with a pointer.

Dist:0.6km<br/>All long since gone. Only part of the boiler house is visibble and by this date the coal fired boilers were out of use and steam was being raised in a couple of boilers converted to burn oil. The oil was supplied by gravity from the tank seen at some elevation on the right hand edge of the photograph. This tank was a converted boiler obtained from another pit.

Dist:0.6km<br/>The square building on the left with wisps of steam housed a unique steam winding engine by W & J Galloway - No. W1. It was soon to be electrified and the whole pit has since gone. Nearby Bickershaw Colliery lasted longer but has also now gone. My slightly younger colleague (19) asked a bemused local "where is the coal place?". PS - I was 21 that day. (Dr Neil clifton's shots knock spots off these).
