Dist:0.1km<br/>Taken from Military Road. Dover Harbour station was built in 1861 at more or less the same time as Admiralty Pier station which served passengers for the Continent. But because of inter-company politics trains arriving at Dover Harbour station were not able to continue their journeys to Dover Admiralty Pier station until 1864. Before Admiralty Pier station opened boat passengers had to use Dover Town station.

Dist:0.1km<br/>During the nineteenth century, competition between the two railway companies (the South Eastern and the London Chatham & Dover) serving Dover led to a considerable duplication of facilities. So much so that prior to 1914 the town had no fewer than four main line stations. One of these was Dover Harbour which was opened by the LC&DR in 1861 and closed by the Southern Railway in 1927. Surprisingly much of its fabric survives over eighty years later. At least part of the buildings seen here is currently used by P&O. Taken looking down from The Viaduct.

Dist:0.2km<br/>This view was taken by my mother at that time 19 and with the maiden name of Ewing. The family (father (John), mother (Annie) and elder sister (Mary)) had been having a seaside holiday at Deal and (as this photo is on the last page of the album) must have been returning home to their house in Denmark Hill, London. It looks as if the train was near Dover Marine station and the view appears to show the Promenade Pier which was demolished this same year.
