Dist:0.1km north<br/>Battersea Railway Bridge was designed by William Baker, chief engineer of the London and North Western Railway, and was opened in 1863 at a cost of £87,000. It was built to carry The West London Extension Railway over Battersea Reach of the River Thames, linking Clapham Junction to the south of the river with Willesden Junction to the north. It consists of five 120 foot or 37 metre long lattice girder arches set on stone piers. According to contemporary Ordnance Survey maps published shortly after its opening it was originally known as Battersea New Bridge. Other sources indicate that it was also called the Cremorne Bridge, after the pleasure grounds in Chelsea. Rail traffic is subject to speed restrictions when using the bridge and here a Southern Railways train bound for Clapham Junction trundles across it. The centre of the river is the boundary between the London Boroughs of Hammersmith and Fulham to the left and Wandsworth to the right.

Dist:0.1km north<br/>Commuter river boat services operate from Chelsea Harbour Pier. Although run privately by Thames Executive Charters they are operated under the Transport for London umbrella. There are five weekday morning services, currently (Summer 2008) scheduled to leave at 0635, 0715, 0750, 0810 and 0855 hours, that go to Blackfriars Millennium Pier via Cadogan Pier and Embankment Pier. Journey times to Blackfriars take about 25 minutes. Curiously there are only three scheduled return services in the afternoon and evenings (1710, 1820, and 1910 hours from Blackfriars if you must know!) Somewhere in the photograph is a plastic owl strategically placed to keep other birds off the superstructure! St Mary's Church, Battersea, is visible across the river with the slanting roofline of the Montevetro block to the left.

The bridge is, I think, a bascule bridge, like Tower Bridge, in that it is one where the bridge deck pivots about a horizontal axis with a counterweight on the other side. Note the traffic lights controlling boat movements into and out of the lock!

Dist:0.1km north<br/>The lock leading into the former Chelsea Basin has been here for a long time, certainly since 1869, when it is shown on the Ordnance Survey maps of that year. Today the basin is a marina and the square holes in the lock gates allow excess water to drain out of the marina into the lock at low tide.
