Dist:0.5km<br/>The Battle of Mortimer's Cross took place during the Wars of the Roses, and paved the way for Yorkist victory: the Yorkist leader, 18-year-old Edward Earl of March (whose father Richard Duke of York had died the previous year) was crowned Edward IV later in 1461 after a crushing victory here. At the battle, the Yorkist leader witnessed an optical effect (known as a "sun-dog" or "parhelion") which gives the appearance of multiple suns in the sky; it is associated with winter light and particularly with Arctic conditions. The Yorkists used the sun as an emblem after this, seeing it as a foreshadowing of their victory; Shakespeare's reference to "this sun of York" in the opening lines of Richard III is an allusion to this.
