Dist:0.3km<br/>The vehicle track through the plantation on Brownberry ends at this point, a little short of where the 1:50000 map shows it reaching, though it continues as a rather narrow ride for some way. This bigger ride extends NE towards the edge of the forest above Harker Springs farm. The sedges are just starting back into growth after a harsh winter, but the shrubbier things like bilberry and heather are still dormant - the ground up here in the shade of the trees has been snow covered for the best part of three months and has only recently emerged.

Dist:0.4km<br/>This is the turning circle at the end of the hardcored track in the forest on Brownberry, a little to the west of where the OS 1:50000 map shows it ending. The track occupies a wide gap in the trees, which, at this point, are spruce on both sides. The gap (and indeed the track surface itself) is being invaded by volunteer spruce seedlings. From this point, three rides lead off rather boggily to the forest edges northeast, south and east.

Dist:0.6km<br/>Whilst the drystone wall seems to mark the boundary of the property which has been forested, it is in a state of some disrepair (two collapsed sections are within a short distance either side of the photographer position) and livestock are kept out of the forest by a pigwire fence with two lines of barbed wire, some way back from the boundary. There is some evidence for vehicles having used the gap, despite its bogginess, most likely something lightweight like a quadbike.

Dist:0.8km<br/>Wester Beck passes under the road to the photographer's right, and gurgles merrily before crossing under the entrance track of Brock Scar to head down to Grassholme Reservoir visible in the distance. On the horizon at the right of the photo, the group of trees is Kirkcarrion, the site of a bronze-age burial, and a landmark visible over a wide area around Middleton-in-Teesdale.

Dist:0.8km<br/>It doesn't look as though is much call for postal services here any more, but the postbox is still emptied every weekday. It's enough of a trek up the road from the Grassholme Reservoir visitor centre that one imagines most tourists will send their postcards from one of the villages back down in the valley. There are a few farms with holiday accommodation further west and one wonders what hoops the Post Office would have to jump through to make moving this postbox somewhere slightly more useful not worth their while.
