... and if you just turn the corner of the path on the first geograph ... and in 1993 it was possible to step through the space in the stones, to look into and/or enter the five megalithic chambers underneath the Barrow.

Once containing the remains of 46 bodies, arranged in different chambers according to age and gender. Apparently when originally constructed, the sides would have been bare chalk, and so visible from a long distance; so probably more than a burial site. http://www.avebury-web.co.uk/wk_lbarrow.html

Dist:0.2km<br/>The earthworks of the West Kennet Long Barrow are around 100 metres long, making it one of the longest neolithic burial mounds in Britain. Its excavated stone chambers at the eastern end usually get the most attention (see various other photographs). The long mound bears the scars of 5000 years of existence, which show up well in this low autumnal sunlight.
