For many years the residents of Tydehams resisted such a development, but it was inevitable that they would eventually succumb. I wonder whether the name is taken from one of the former owners of the gardens.

Dist:0.7km<br/>No, not something that happened after the troops returned in 1982, but the name of this small parade of shops adjacent to the Falkland memorial.

Dist:0.7km<br/>This is the monument to Viscount Falkland, one of the royalist commanders at the 1st battle of Newbury. The inscription on the stone can be seen here [[1181177]]] and the opposite view can be seen here [[[1181172]]]. I checked carefully with the GPS which square this is in. I am standing four metres in from the north-east corner of the square looking south-west, with my back to the roundabout junction of the Andover Road with Essex Street, so I am confident this is the correct square.
