Dist:0.4km north<br/>Wentbridge Viaduct is one of the finest bridges built in Yorkshire, if not the UK in the 20th Century. It was designed by F.A.(Joe) Sims of the West Riding County Council and completed in 1961. This photograph was taken soon after in June 1963. The total span is 450ft between abutments, which themselves are hollow and truly enormous inside. Having carried out the first Principal Inspection of the bridge in the 1980s, I discovered that the prestressing cables, external to the internal webs of the cellular box deck were at risk of corrosion from road de-icing salt. Dist:0.8km west<br/>This photograph is taken from Wentbridge Village, at a point just south of the river Went on the edge of the B6474 (the old A1). The footpath leads all along the valley, through Brockadale Woods, to Kirk Smeaton. Barely visible, centre shot is Wentbridge Viaduct, which carried the main A1 trunk road across the valley.
