Dist:0.2km<br/>The original lane was cut when the bypass was built, and the wooden fence in the centre reservation shows where access is still nominally provided through the barrier. However, sight lines and traffic speeds and volume would make crossing a hazardous undertaking. Recently a footpath has been constructed running underneath the viaduct - just to the right of the picture - and the fingerpost indicating its re-emergence of the far side can be seen here. Interestingly, the local authority footpath map does not show this latest development.

Dist:0.4km<br/>Wentbridge Viaduct is one of the finest bridges built in Yorkshire, if not the UK in the 20th Century. It was designed by F.A.(Joe) Sims of the West Riding County Council and completed in 1961. This photograph was taken soon after in June 1963. The total span is 450ft between abutments, which themselves are hollow and truly enormous inside. Having carried out the first Principal Inspection of the bridge in the 1980s, I discovered that the prestressing cables, external to the internal webs of the cellular box deck were at risk of corrosion from road de-icing salt. Dist:0.4km<br/>When constructed in 1961, it was the first of its kind in terms of its design and construction in the UK, if not in Europe. For anyone interested in the technicalities of the viaduct and its construction, this site http://www.motorwayarchive.ihtservices.co.uk/a1redwenscheme.htm has a comprehensive description. In brief, the deck consists of two outer spans of 140ft and a centre span of 190ft. At the foot of the legs the span is 308ft. The deck is nearly 100ft above the valley floor.
