Dist:0.4km<br/>Armstrong Bridge was constructed 1875-78 for the citizens of Newcastle by Sir William Armstrong, and Messrs. WE Jackson, masons. The wrought iron girders and columns are set on cast iron rocker bearings, and the central column has sliding bearings, to allow for movement caused by mining subsidence and heat. Dist:0.4km<br/>The new road crosses the Ouse Burn at the south end of Jesmond Dene, between Armstrong Bridge, towering above the glacier carved valley [[2082731]], and Benton Bridge. Building of the Cradlewell bypass [[2088778]] in 1993 became the setting for a major protest largely centred about the destruction of the 180 or so mature trees in its path.
