Dist:0.3km north<br/>There are many silver birch trees on this part of West Heath: they thrive in the acid soil. Birch bark has been used since very early times as a form of parchment in Northern Europe and in North America. Surviving birch bark documents found in the excavations of ancient Novgorod, for example, have given archaeologists a very full picture of what life was like there in mediaeval times. Dist:0.3km north<br/>Even on a cold Sunday in January this park is popular with families for its play equipment, zoo and other recreational facilities. It once formed the grounds of a big house and although it adjoins the western section of Hampstead Heath it does not share its wildness, nor is it open all hours.
