Dist:0.4km<br/>Better known locally as Leyburn Shawl Quarry, these working go unnoticed by the majority of walkers on the Shawl footpath as the quarry is well screened by trees. The quarry opened in 1899 to supply fluxing stone to the steel industries of Middlesbrough. It was connected directly to the nearby railway line by an incline which operated on a continuous rope system, with full trucks on the descent pulling empty trucks to the top. The quarry has been closed since 1980, but part is now used for landfill.
