Dist:0.1km north<br/>Pevsner says that "The west tower is one of the Tynedale pre-Conquest group [ie Saxon]. It is tall and unbuttressed and has large irregular quoins and small round-headed windows, deeply splayed internally; the belfry stage is probably of 1765."

Dist:0.2km north<br/>The earliest part of the Church of St Michael, the tower, probably dates to the Anglo-Saxon period, possibly of 10th or 11th century date. Although there was an earlier nave, the current one was built in the 18th century on older foundations. It is thought the church was built on the oratory of St John of Beverley, an Anglo-Saxon saint. A number of Roman stones re-used as Christian burial slabs stand in the church porch.
