Welcome to Wapping. This is a guide to the Wapping area.

Taken from a riverboat, from the south-east of the church. The church (built in 1821) is at 302 The Highway, and the parish is combined with St James Ratcliffe. St Paul is known as the sea-captains' church.

Once a busy docks area close to the River Thames serving London, now a quiet corner of Wapping where the dockside buildings have been converted into expensive homes. In the distance is the Gherkin so this location is popular with City workers who can afford the high prices.

The once-busy wharves in the Lower Pool of London have now been converted into luxury apartments. Metropolitan Wharf is one of the few remaining buildings in Wapping High Street that still retains the character of this area.

This bridge spans the entrance canal to Shadwell Basin. In former times, the bridge could be lifted by pivoting at the right hand end. The basin is no longer open to the river, and is used for recreational purposes, eg, the kayaks under the bridge.

On Wapping Wall, this purports to be London's oldest riverside inn. It has been called the Devil's Tavern as it was used by pirates but the current name comes from The Tavern Near the Prospect of Whitby (the Whitby ship that was moored nearby).

The 'Prospect of Whitby', probably London's oldest Thames-side inn, was certainly in business as long ago as 1520, when it was known as the Devil's Inn. Nowadays perfectly respectable, it was in the past the haunt of almost every kind of villain known to the authorities. Samuel Pepys and Charles Dickens are known to have dined there, and it was for many years associated with Judge Jeffreys. To the right can be seen the spire of St. Paul's Church, Shadwell, which looks like a Wren church, but isn't.

Almost hidden away on the narrow Wapping High Street is the entrance to Wapping station. Buy a ticket and go down the lift (or stairs) to the depths of the Thames Tunnel. Go southwards by train and you are a Privileged Person. There are scores of tunnels under the Thames now. But this was the very first, so occupies a place of honour in civil engineering terms. Nor was it built easily, for engineer Marc Brunel did not live to see it finished, leaving that to his talented son Isambard.

Looking downstream, the Canary Wharf tower is seen in the distance. Nearer at hand, the scaffold, complete with noose, reminds us of the association of Judge Jeffreys with the 'Prospect of Whitby'.

This is taken from the bridge spanning the 'New' entrance to the basin, from the Thames, (the 'Old' entrance has been filled in for some years). Until recently, water passage waas available from here, through the East and Western London Docks and out into the Thames again through Hermitage Basin, not far from the Tower. But this water route is not available now as the London Docks have been filled in. Attractive modern housing has recently been built around the basin and these are some of the most expensive properties in the capital.

This is taken looking the opposite way to [[555932]] and shows what is now the only entrance to Shadwell Basin. As we are looking eastwards here, the Canary Wharf tower is prominent: owing to bends in the river, it appears that this is south of the Thames, rather then north, which is where it really is.
