The public house is the Brewery Tap, and received its beer direct by pipeline from the brewery itself, seen behind. Young's beers have always enjoyed a very high level of respect from real ale aficionados. At the time of this photograph, it was the practice for the beer barrels destined for the more local outlets, of which there were many, to be delivered by a two-horse dray. Sadly modern traffic conditions have now rendered this impracticable.

The splendid Victorian pub, diagonally opposite [[20228]] in the town centre, dates from 1898, but this striking entrance is later.

Old York Road maintains a village high street character, in contrast to the much busier town centre of Wandsworth just to the south, although traditional shops have largely disappeared, being replaced by cafes and estate agents. This southwestern stretch is just inside the square.
