Dist:0.3km<br/>Ivor Gurney (1890-1937) was that rare beast - a composer and WW1 war poet of equal renown. A contemporary of Vaughan Williams and Gustav Holst whilst studying at the Royal College of Music Ivor was considered by his tutors, in terms of composition, to be the most talented of his generation. His output was prodigious including 200 songs and over 300 poems. A WW1 volunteer he was gassed at St Julien in May 1917 and invalided out of the army. His two most famous volumes of war poetry are entitled 'Severn and Somme' and 'War's embers'. Sadly, his life was plagued with fits of depression and we was certified insane by his family in September 1922 and placed originally in a Gloucester asylum. Writing songs only until 1926 he continued writing poetry until his early death. His years of incarceration to many improved the intensity of his poetry relating the horrors of warfare. He died of TB on Boxing Day 1937 aged just 47 in the City of London Mental Hospital in Dartford. He is buried in the churchyard of St Matthew's in Twigworth in his beloved Gloucestershire which featured so prominently in many of his works. The gravestone is not the original which was damaged but is now on display inside the church.
