A Reflective Journey
Elizabeth Crabtree Llb, BA (Hons) Fine Art

Through vibrant and atmospheric paintings Elizabeth Crabtree presents A reflective journey through her childhood during the early years of India’s Independence.

Elizabeth was born in Calcutta (now Kolkata) in India in 1949 and was educated there in a Catholic school and college run by Loreto nuns. She has lived in Lancashire for 32 years, being based in Rossendale for the last 17 years.

This thought-provoking and stimulating exhibition is a collection of work produced over the last two years. The paintings combine acrylic and oil paints, given new dimensions through the use of original scraps of letters, ground rice, coffee, braid, beads, sequins, glitter, and silver leaf.

In the paintings Elizabeth has used her childhood name in Malayalam, the language of Kerala where her family originate from in India, and also key words in Hindi and Bengali, languages, in addition to English, that she would have spoken as a child.

“My paintings are not an attempt at photo-realism but rather I hope to capture that illusionary and often ‘delusionary’ aspect of recollections of childhood. I found the work challenging to say the least. The memories evoked so far are happy ones, reflecting the life of a privileged child growing up in a major city in the Fifties.”

Elizabeth invites visitors to join in by sharing their own childhood memories on a “paper boat” and will be holding a craft workshop at the Museum on Monday 16 February. For further details please contact the Museum on 01772 534075 or check our website www.lancashire.gov.uk/museums
