By 1962 many BR(WR) express services employed Diesels: here we have Beyer-Peacock Hymek 1,700 hp Type 3 (later Class 35) B-B Diesel-Hydraulic No. D7023. The express had left Pembroke Dock at 13.05, was not stopping here and would reach Paddington at 19.45. The station is in progress of rebuilding as an island. Behind is Mynydd Margam (1,409 ft.).

Dist:0.2km<br/>Passengers enter and leave the station using the footbridge which is connected to the platforms via stairs into the waiting area. Wheelchair users and other people who cannot use the stairs need to give 24 hours notice so that arrangements can be made for them to cross the tracks. This unsatisfactory situation was addressed in plans announced in March 2011 for a major upgrade of station facilities, including a new enclosed footbridge with lifts providing an alternative access to the platforms.

Dist:0.2km<br/>The sculpture on a plinth is on the corner of Station Road and the A48, near the railway station. http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/2829913 The sculpture is dedicated to the generations of steelworkers of the area. The Abbey Steelworks, completed in 1952, was for a time the largest employer in Wales, with 18,000 workers.
