The old towpath runs along the bank of the River Severn all the way from Tewkesbury. Here it is skirting the Lammas Meadow on the flood plains of Upton Ham. There are numbered fishing stations every few yards along the riverside for anglers to use: permits can be purchased in Upton. The modern angler carries so much more than a simple cane rod and can at first be mistaken for a golfer with his wheeled cart.

Dist:0.1km<br/>Flowing towards Tewkesbury, Gloucester, Bristol and the open sea. A major route way before the M5 and the railways. Many small ships or large boats could sail upstream using the predominant south-westerly winds and return simply floating downstream with the current. Upton was a very important small riverside town and bridge crossing point with plenty of inns providing nourishment and accommodation .

Dist:0.2km<br/>Looking over the River Severn flood plain known as Upton Ham towards the town. The spire of the Victorian church of St Peter and St Paul is on the left. Towards the right is the old medieval church tower with its 18th century octagonal wooden lantern and copper covered cupola known as the "Pepperpot". In the distance the Malvern Hills range can be seen from British Camp on the left to North hill on the right.

Dist:0.2km<br/>The narrow boat is travelling upstream towards Upton and is passing the entrance to Upton Marina. The arched footbridge carries the riverside public footpath.

Dist:0.2km<br/>For many centuries the river was a major route way for the transportation of goods from ports as far in land as Worcester and Stourport. Since the introduction of canals, railways and good roads (especially motorways) the river is used for little except pleasure. Here holiday narrow boats, designed for canals, are heading down stream towards Tewkesbury.

Dist:0.2km<br/>The Malvern Hills provides a good high-level viewpoint for flooding in the Severn valley south of Worcester. Here all the low-lying ground around Upton is under water with the village between the church and the 'pepper pot' just above the water line.
