Willersley Castle is a classical mansion with romanticised battlements and turrets. Built in 1789 for the cotton spinning entrepeneur Richard Arkwright, proprietor of the nearby mills. It remained in the ownership of the Arkwright family until 1928 when it was purchased by the Wesley Guild for use as a Guild hotel and conference centre, a role it still fulfills.

The site of Masson Mills was chosen at the point where the River Derwent drops over a rocky ledge, thus providing a good head for the water wheel. This was further raised by means of an artificial embankment to create a weir to divert water through the mill to drive the machinery.
