The current pub set back from the roundabout here is a much newer building.

Dist:1.1km east<br/>It's difficult to imagine now but this was briefly once the route of one of the country's main arterial railways out of London. By 1857 the Midland Railway had built a line from Leicester to Hitchin via Bedford through here, using the Great Northern Railway's track south of Hitchin to get to King's Cross. However congestion and consequent delays to their trains forced the Midland Railway to build their own line into London from Bedford to St Pancras. This was completed by 1868, so 11 years after it was built the line through here was downgraded to a cross-country route. The original double track was reduced to a single track along most of the route by 1911, and, despite brief wartime increases in traffic due to the military bases along the route, passenger trains ceased running at the end of 1961. Freight trains lingered on for another 8 years before they too were withdrawn and the track lifted. This photograph is viewed looking across the B659 Hitchin Road with the site of the former Henlow station behind the photographer. The railway crossed the road by means of a level crossing at this point. The trackbed then passes through RAF Henlow beyond this location.

Dist:1.1km east<br/>Deserted on a Sunday afternoon this view was taken from the southern end of the estate looking towards the B659 Hitchin Road. Up until the 1960s this was the site of Henlow railway station and its sidings, with the route of the Bedford and Hitchin Railway running behind the industrial units to the right.
