This Summer Saturday express left Minehead at 12.20 and was joined by the Ilfracombe (dep. 13.10) portion at Taunton, then ran through Bristol and via Filton Junction, Yate, Gloucester avoiding-line, Cheltenham, Stratford-on-Avon and Birmingham (Snow HIll) to Wolverhampton (Low Level) (arr. 18.20). The locomotive is 4-6-0 No. 5999 'Wollaton Hall' (built 6/40, withdrawn 12/65).

In the last days of steam haulage on the WR, 4-6-0 No. 6918 'Sandon Hall' (built 6/41, named 4/46, withdrawn 9/65) probably took over at St Philips Marsh on the Bristol Loop.

This is the Summer Saturday 08.35 Ilfracombe via Taunton and Bristol (Temple Meads) to Manchester (Exchange), making for the Severn Tunnel then north from Newport (Maindee East Junction). The locomotive is a - very shabby - 'Castle' 4-6-0 No. 5071 'Spitfire' (built 6/38 as 'Clifford Castle', renamed 9/40, recently fitted with a double-chimney, withdrawn 10/63).

After the Somerset & Dorset line from Bath to Bournemouth was closed in 1962, the holiday expresses to Bournemouth from the Midlands and North had to find alternative routes. This Saturday Relief from Nottingham was presumably routed from Bristol all round via Bath, Westbury and Salisbury. Stanier 5MT 4-6-0 No. 44814 (built 1944, withdrawn 9/67) will hand over to a GW locomotive in Bristol, either at St Philpis Marsh or Temple Meads. The holiday traffic to Bournemouth was destined to fall off subsequently and such complicated routings were short-lived.

The 09.00 Manchester (London Road) - Paignton express has come via Crewe, Shrewsbury, Hereford and the Severn Tunnel and is heading for Bristol (Temple Meads) on its way to Paignton, headed by 'Castle' 4-6-0 No. 5079 'Lysander' (built 5/39 as 'Lydford Castle', renamed 11/40, withdrawn 5/60). Dist:0.4km<br/>View southward, towards Temple Meads and the West, also Bath and the East and South, via Dr. Day's Bridge Junction. 'Hall' 4-6-0 No. 4913 'Baglan Hall' (built 2/29, withdrawn a month after this photograph) has probably taken over this train at Temple Mead. The train left Newquay at 08.00 and did not reach Manchester (Piccadilly) until about 19.30, via the Severn Tunnel, Hereford, Shrewsbury and Crewe - a pretty awful journey especially for those with children, but quicker than by road.

Dist:0.4km<br/>The Bristol & Bath Railway Path was the inaugural section of the National Cycle Network when it opened in 1977. This was another age well before the advent of the mountain or all terrain bike in the UK. Riders obviously cut this corner on their way into the city centre to save a few seconds. I suppose the only answer is to put up some pedestrian guardrail as a deterrent.

This is a typical Summer Saturday holiday express, taking the Filton route out of Bristol to Yate and thence north towards Gloucester, Birmingham etc. The locomotive is Hughes/Fowler 5P4F 2-6-0 No. 42798. (The splendid noise it made - together with that of many other steam locomotives of the early 1960s, I tape-recorded at the time and hope to make available).
