Dist:0.2km<br/>Frank Brangwyn painted 16 panels commissioned for the House of Lords. When they were rejected for being too colourful, Swansea incorporated them into the building of the Guildhall and renamed the assembly room to the "Brangwyn Hall". Here you can see a 17th panel just above the doorway which was painted especially to fill the gap. The panels depict the people, flora and fauna of the empire in a bright and fantastic collage.

Dist:0.2km<br/>Legend has it that Swansea was named "Sweyne's Ey" by the Vikings - after Sweyne Forkbeard, a 10th century Viking king. See http://www.bbc.co.uk/wales/whatsinaname/sites/placenames/pages/swansea.shtml The Guildhall was built with quite a bit of Viking detailing to hark back to Swansea's past. Dist:0.2km<br/>This chamber is extensively covered in exotic hardwood and has a tapestry running all around it below the ceiling. For example, the supporting steel & concrete pillars are clad in scalloped shells of walnut. The shells are made from two single pieces each spanning the entire height of the column and carved from a whole tree. The chamber is now too precious to be used for everyday meetings and is only used for special occasions.

Dist:0.2km<br/>The Brangwyn Hall is a concert venue within Swansea's Guildhall. This is a shot of the stage with its built-in pipe organ. The hall is named after the panels, painted by Frank Brangwyn, that adorn its walls. See also [[1491172]]

Dist:0.2km<br/>The Brangwyn Hall was full for most of the morning and afternoon, hosting the Fourth UK Mega Geocaching Event - almost 1,400 attended during the day. This is just one kind of event hosted in this hall - events can range from formal degree presentations or classical music concerts to wedding breakfasts - or even to fun events like this! Slight motion blur due to an incorrect exposure setting on the camera.

Dist:0.3km<br/>View westward, towards Mumbles (on former Tramway - over to right), Gowerton, Pontardulais, Llandovery etc.; ex-London & North Western Central Wales Line(Craven Arms - Swansea Victoria). The photograph was taken from a train from Shrewsbury via Craven Arms; the line was closed from Pontardulais on 27/6/64 and subsequently a passenger service on the 'Heart of Wales' line has been run to Llanelli instead of Swansea. The Swansea & Mumbles (electric) Tramway lasted until 5/1/60). Note the wind-blown sand on the platform, which was a constant nuisance.
