It was just called simply "The Science Library" in my day! My most vivid memory of being in here would have been in late 1978 when working on the write-up of our 3rd year Organic Chemistry project. I discovered in the literature a reaction which explained why the fourth stage of an six or eight stage synthesis gave us an awful mixture of products which consisted mainly of the compound we had started with three weeks before.

When I studied here in the late '70's I thought this was the most boring and ugly building. I'm beginning to change my mind – looking at this photo, it's like a painting by Mondrian. I don't know whether this is still the case, but then the three branches of chemistry where split across the three floors: the ground floor was Physical Chemistry ('cos they had the heavy equipment) the top floor was Organic Chemistry ('cos they made all the smells) and Inorganic was the jam in the middle – told by an Inorganic professor! A bit more Nov. 2010: An Alumni magazine which dropped through my letterbox today has a short article about the building as it is celebrating its 50th birthday. I now learn that it was designed by Basil Spence http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Basil_Spence .

Dist:0.1km<br/>An interesting contrast between 1960's and 2000's architecture. I don't know anything about architecture – but I also don't know what I like! While I admire the Centre for Bimolecular Sciences (foreground) fundamentally I think I might just prefer the '60's Tower block. It has no pretensions.

Dist:0.2km<br/>Houses the Electrical and Electronic Engineering dept. The top floors used to house the Architecture dept. in the '70's but I don't think it does now. We always used to say that it served them right - at that time architects had been marooning people at the top of tower blocks for a couple of decades - and it was their turn!
