Dist:0.2km<br/>We are in a field of oil seed rape stubble. Clearbrook Farm is bottom left of the picture. Higher and to the right is the valley containing the Cam Brook on its way from Camerton. This valley holds the remains of the Somerset Coal Canal - Northern Branch, which terminated near High Littleton. The bridle way from Pipehouses to Midford is a few yards behind the camera.

Dist:0.3km<br/>Cast-iron milepost of the late 18th century for the Bath Turnpike Trust. The Turnpike trusts were set up in the 18C and improved the roads by collecting tolls from those passing the toll gates set on major roads. Bath Turnpike Trust, established under an Act of 1707, was the first such Trust in North Somerset.

Dist:0.4km<br/>The B3110 runs between Woolverton to the south and Odd Down, south of Bath. It sees little of great interest except at Midford where it passes under two ex-railway viaducts (one of which is now removed and the other closed to rail traffic) and over the Somerset Coal Canal which is also closed. Never mind, it also passes the Hope and Anchor public house which, thankfully,is still open.

Dist:0.4km<br/>The viaduct was built to carry the former Somerset and Dorset railway from Bath to the south coast. It crossed a road, a river and another old railway, the Limpley Stoke to Camerton branch. At the left of the image can be seen a smaller bridge that carried the Limpley Stoke line beneath the right-hand arch of the viaduct.

I didn't know how they might be connected until I received the following information from another contributor: "Hope and Anchor - Most of us would no doubt think this is a nautical sign, but this was originally used as a religious sign, as it is the Christian symbol of the virtue of Hope. Thus the Hope and Anchor is really a visual tautology. But it often makes a wonderful sign, with Hope being shown as a white gowned woman. Later the Anchor became obviously associated with sailors' pubs. When the Pilgrims landed in America (at the wrong place, incidentally - they were heading for Virginia but landed at Plymouth Rock because they were out of beer and other necessities) their first words were "We Anchor in Hope"."

Dist:0.4km<br/>The higher of the two railway viaducts, on the right, carries National Cycleway NCN24, along The Bristol and North Somerset Railway. The lower viaduct, immediately on the left, carried the Camerton-Limpley Stoke railway along the course of the former Somersetshire Coal Canal. For a while, Midford had separate stations on each line.

Dist:0.4km<br/>A welcome sight in this village in the bottom of a big dip on the B3110, which is often a barrier to adequate mobile phone reception. Along with many rural phone boxes, this one has been converted to no longer accept coins – you will need to have your credit card handy if you are to make a call from here.

Dist:0.4km<br/>The viaduct, which was built in the 19th century, carried the Somerset and Dorset railway south from Bath to the south coast. The line was axed in the 1960s but fortunately the viaduct survived to become part of the National Cycle Network operated by Sustrans. The viaduct is part of route 24.
