Dist:0.5km<br/>This is a mission church, i.e. one that was built to allow people to worship locally as the parish church, St Mewan, is at some distance from the village of Sticker. The church was opened in 1877 and has a regular and dedicated congregation. Inside, the church is plain but with a friendly feel to it. My thanks to the parish priest for allowing me a look inside and for most of the above information. I note that at the time of writing a couple of other websites which purport to show a photograph of this church have misidentified the old church hall as the church itself.

Dist:0.7km<br/>Sticker village grew up with the mining industry in the 19th century. When that industry declined in the latter half of the century, people were able to find work in the local china clay industry. Although the clay industry is still here, it became increasingly mechanised through the latter half of the 20th century and ceased to be a major employer.

Dist:0.7km<br/>Sticker is now a quiet backwater since it was bypassed by the Truro-St Austell road in the late C20th.

Dist:0.7km<br/>Just to the south-west of the famous Great Polgooth Mine, South Polgooth was mined for tin from the 1830s and for arsenic in 1916. Remains on this recently cleared up site include the old enginehouse and parts of an arsenic calciner and flue, which appear to have re-used the redundant engine chimney.

Dist:0.7km<br/>This enginehouse on the South Polgooth Mine is a well-known landmark on Commerce Moor near Five Lanes. The house is slowly disappearing under the ivy and starting to break up.

Dist:0.8km<br/>This engine house was built in 1880 to contain a pumping engine that apparently also drove stamps. The mine closed in 1882. There was a short reworking in 1916-17 when arsenic was mined. The lodes carried copper, arsenic and Tungsten. This is in a prominent position on high ground.

Dist:0.8km<br/>This church is now a private dwelling. There are only a few houses nearby but there is a converted schoolhouse. In the 19th century with a number of mines close by, this area was probably a lot more populous than it is now.

Dist:0.9km<br/>Polgooth is a large village stretching up the hillside from the valley bottom. Most of the village appears to be quite affluent. A favourite place to get away from it all?
