Dist:0.4km<br/>This celebrated pub has been closed for several years. In the 60s it was renowned for serving 'Mendip Wallfish' - snails, the garden brown Helix aspersa, which were raised in a disused swimming pool, cooked in butter (no garlic) after a lengthy preparation. It was also the place where the Priddy Oggy, a pasty, was originally made, and in the 70s, the first of the small pub breweries was established, with an output of 5 gallons a fortnight!

Dist:0.4km<br/>An updated image of this stack on Priddy green can be seen in the first Geograph. The village hosts an annual sheep fair, a tradition which dates back to 1348 since when it has occurred every year apart from during the foot and mouth epidemics in 2001 and 2007. Originally it took place every August 10th, the feast of St Lawrence the Martyr, but now it is on the nearest Wednesday to August 21st. According to a local legend, as long as the hurdle stack remains in the village, so will the fair. (Hurdles were of course essential for making temporary sheep pens.)

"These hurdles are a symbolic reconstruction of the collection which were stored here to form the pens for the sheep fair which moved from Wells to Priddy in 1348 at the outbreak of the Black Death. The fair is now held annually on the nearest Wednesday to the original date of 21th August."

Dist:0.5km<br/>Seen across a field of rapeseed from Pelting Drove, this is described at http://webapp1.somerset.gov.uk/her/details.asp?prn=19070 as "a Post Medieval or Modern quarry pit", occupying a depression, presumably with a swallow-hole. "The quarry is situated on the Clifton Down Limestone and Burrington Oolite Limestone ... Small quarries were often excavated in this area for the building of field walls ... The quarry is defined by an amorphous pit measuring 52m north to south by 56m east to west".

Dist:0.5km<br/>This is what they said about Priddy in 1868: "PRIDDY, a parish in the hundred of Wells Forum, county Somerset, 5 miles N.W. of Wells, its post town. The village, which is of small extent, and wholly agricultural, lies in a small hollow near the summit of the Mendip range of hills, at an elevation of nearly 1,000 feet above sea-level. A great portion of the land is in pasture. The soil is of a light nature, with a subsoil of limestone. A Roman camp exists in the neighbourhood, and there are traces of numerous lead and silver mines, supposed to have been worked by the Romans and Britons. The impropriate tithes have been commuted for a rent-charge of £40, and the vicarial for one of £43. The living is a perpetual curacy in the diocese of Bath and Wells, value £232. The church, dedicated to St. Lawrence, is an ancient stone structure with a tower containing three bells. There is a place of worship for Independents. The parochial charities produce about £23 per annum. The register dates from 1761. James Green, Esq., is lord of the manor."
