Dist:0.1km<br/>This used to be a major junction in the town, with the main street continuing through the junction to Industry Street and onwards to Oxgang and Waterside. However the first phase of the town's link road (accessed by turning left) effectively emasculated Industry street by severing it a few hundred metres past this junction - and the Dalrymple Memorial can just be discerned in the sunlight (see other Geograph for a closer view). The road on the right leads south to Whitegates and Lenzie.

Dist:0.2km<br/>Picture taken from the trackbed, looking south to Lenzie, this was Kirkintilloch's rail connection to the outside world, and through the arch was one of Kirkintilloch's TWO railway stations, this halt - "Back o' Loch", and the main station for the town was 0.75km further north. The line left the main Glasgow to Edinburgh route just east of Lenzie station, and headed northwards to Kirkintilloch and the Campsie valley (Lennoxtown, Strathblane & Blanefield). A junction at Whitegates provided a spur to the Forth & Clyde canal for the shipment of coal at Middlemuir Basin (now infilled). The bridge is scheduled for demolition as it is in the way of the new Kirkintilloch 'Link Road' which will use much of the railway's southern alignment to Lenzie and onwards to an extended M80 motorway at Muirhead.

Dist:0.2km<br/>This memorial is located in Industry Street, and is in memory of the Dalrymples, and erected in 1905. The inscription reads; "Presented to the town of Kirkintilloch by James D G Dalrymple of Woodhead. Senior Magistrate of the burgh of Barony of Kirkintilloch. 1905". Whilst it might seem a good idea of self publicity, it is highly unlikely whether anyone would tolerate the self publicity of 'gifting' a memorial to yourself in your local town, but perhaps magistrates were held in higher regard then. On the other faces of the memorial are listed all the male members of the Dalrymple bloodline from the 1700's.

Dist:0.3km<br/>This bridge over the Forth & Clyde canal used to be a lifting bridge, but after the canal was cut by the building of the A80 dual carriageway at Castlecary, councils took great delight in infilling sections of the canal, and Townhead was no exception. The canal was culverted at this point and the gap infilled. When news of the reopening became a reality some 35 years later, the culvert was removed and a new bridge built to span the canal once more. To save money, no provision was made for the towpath to remain with the canal alignment, and walkers and cyclists must now use the ramp to reach road level to cross it. The only saving grace is that the council did provide a set of pedestrian crossing lights here.

Dist:0.3km<br/>This rustic building is one of the oldest still standing in the town and has been converted from a typical weaver's workplace (one of the original trades before heavy industry arrived) and the building dates from 1830. It has been a place of worship belonging to a New Testament based Brethren Assembly for many years. Note the unusual placement of the extractor fan, in the middle of the nearest window... was it installed by a height-challenged glazier? The main hall is to the rear, and not visible from the main road. The Library is behind the other two windows. Thanks to SM for the information update.
