Dist:0.3km<br/>(Petasites hybridus) Butterbur has some similarities to another plant, [[395121]]; in both species, the flower appears quite early in the year, before the large leaf is fully developed. In his book "Flora Britannica", Richard Mabey explains that Butterbur leaves were used for wrapping butter in the days before refrigeration, and he describes the features of the leaf that made it particularly suitable for this. He also notes that the generic name Petasites is from the Greek 'petasos' – &#960;&#941;&#964;&#945;&#963;&#959;&#962; – meaning "a broad-brimmed felt hat", the size of the full-grown leaf making it useful for providing shade. The picture was taken just to the south-east of the [[2884296]]; see that photograph for context. The same fence appears in both photographs.

Dist:0.3km<br/>This long straight mound receding into the distance represents the former course of the Forth and Clyde Junction Railway. It is well seen from this viewpoint in the woods between the main road and the Catter Burn.

Dist:0.3km<br/>One of Dr Beeching's rejects is decaying in a field in Strathendrick. It is not the only railway relic here, as it is beside the trackbed of the closed Forth and Clyde Junction Railway between Dumbarton and Stirling. The railway closed in 1959.

Dist:0.6km<br/>The picture was taken from the road, and shows just some of the geese that were in the field. They were not identifiable to species from this distance, but I had no intention of disturbing the birds by trying to get closer. The Campsie Hills are visible in the background.
