This communication tower, at one of the highest spots in Leeds, can be seen from a great distance on land and from the air as one approaches Leeds-Bradford airport. The standard name for this tower seems to be "Tinshill Tower" but it is also known locally as "Cookridge Tower". The brick tower on the left is part of a fire station and there is also a water tower further to the left, off the frame.

This communications tower is on one of the highest points in north Leeds, and is visible from many miles away on a clear day. And the hard-surfaced sports pitch belonging to the new Ralph Thoresby High School, in the foreground.

The fire station is slightly out of place ! Its actually in Tinshill, and Cookridge is about half a mile away to the north.

These are the new school buildings. The school moved into them in September 2007. The OS map has not yet been updated to show these buildings. The old buildings, just to the east are now being demolished. See also [[[628876]]] The school is named after Ralph Thoresby (1658-1724), who is known as the first historian of Leeds. I'm standing on Farrar Lane, near the junction with Raynel Way. The bollards prevent vehicles from going up the lane.

The stile gives access to a path behind the houses on Raynel Way. But you can just walk around the end of the fence.

The John Sowerby Theatre formed part of Ralph Thoresby High School, and was also used as a community theatre. The school has moved to new buildings, which include a new John Sowerby Theatre. It was named after John Sowerby who used to be Head of Drama at the school. See also [[[628886]]]

When the school has been demolished, a new store will be built for ASDA, to replace their store in the Holt Park District Centre (to my right). The building to the right is the Holt Park Leisure Centre. The city council plans to redevelop the District Centre and Leisure Centre, but the final plans have not yet been made public. Ralph Thoresby High School was built in the 1970's as part of a complex that included a shopping centre, leisure centre, theatre and public library. The theatre (on the right) and library (behind the tree left of centre) were an integral part of the school. The new school opened in September 2007, including a new theatre and library.
