Dist:0.3km<br/>Roachburn Colliery was worked from 1893 to 1908, producing household coal. It is remarkable in that it was the first colliery in the world to be powered by electricity. The building to the left was the generator house, producing DC power from a steam-driven generator fuelled by coal. The concrete pit housed the flywheel.

It is remarkable in that it was the first colliery in the world to be powered by electricity. This view is from the site of the old screens adjoining "Lord Carlisle's Railway" which provided transport down to Brampton Junction and the rest of the national rail network. Dist:0.5km<br/>The beck which drains Tindale Tarn is carried in a tunnel under the old zinc smelter works, Here it can be seen emerging from under the embankment which once carried "Lord Carlisle's Railway", a line which ran south-eastwards from Brampton serving the various mines and works in the area.

Dist:0.5km<br/>A large works existed here during the 19th century to extract zinc from spent lead ore brought down from Alston Moor. The works closed in 1895 when Lady Carlisle, the landlord, insisted on high standards for workers' houses, which proved uneconomic for the operators to provide. The works were reopened briefly twice in the 20th century. In the 1950s, the huge quanitity of waste material was used as hardcore in the construction of the Blue Streak rocket testing facility at Spadeadam. Small quantites of slag can still be seen on the slopes.
