The Dream of Gerontius

Fri, Apr 10
Venue: Leeds Parish Church
Location: Leeds
This performance of Elgar's choral masterpiece by the full Choral Foundation of Leeds Parish Church, led by St Peter's Singers, makes the most fitting possible tribute to Sir Edward's genius in the 75th anniversary year of his death. Dr Lindley has a special family link with Elgar, and it was his maternal great-grandmother, Marie Brema, who sang the role of the Angel at the first performance in the 1900 Birmingham Festival.

Elgar's The Dream of Gerontius forms part of the main fabric of English music. This is the best of me... the composer wrote - this, if anything, Newman's deeply personal poem drew from the composer utterly compelling and arresting music whose progress, though episodic in many ways, is most wonderfully wrought as a continuous kind of spiritual tapestry. The use of motto themes, many presented at the outset in the memorable Prelude, provides a special unity throughout. Once again in Good Friday 2009, the Singers are joined by resident soloists Kathryn Woodruff, Paul Dutton and Quentin Brown and by Sally Robinson's marvellous English Festival Orchestra with David Houlder presiding at the Parish Church's magnificent organ. In terms of Elgar's endeavour, the composer's famous use of the celebrated Ruskin quote says it all: This is the best of me. For the rest I ate, I drank, I slept, I loved, I hated as another. My life was vapour, and is not. But this is what I saw and know. This, if anything of mine, is worth your memory. Read more »
