Dist:1.0km east<br/>See [[[911793]]]. This inscribed stone was erected by the City of London in 1804 to thank Charles Truss for 30 years' service in maintaining the navigability of the river.

Dist:1.0km east<br/>The island is only about a hundred metres long and is on the west bank of the River Thames. It is named after Charles Truss, who was appointed Clerk of Works to the Worshipful Committee of Thames Navigation of the City of London in 1774. His task was to improve the navigability of the river by improving the locks and towpaths. This he did for 36 years until 1810 when he was 82 years old and he was then awarded a pension of £200 a year by the City. The inscribed stone can be seen in close-up here [[[911810]]]. The river is beyond the vegetation to the right. The island suffered from years of neglect but was the subject of a major refurbishment by Runnymede Borough Council in 1991.
