Dist:0.3km<br/>The boat is returning to the quarry at Ripple, about two miles downstream, after unloading 195 tonnes of sand and gravel. At Ryall the aggregates are washed and separated into various grades and delivered by road to CEMEX concrete making plants. The use of barges saves 116 journeys by lorry on the country lanes around Ripple each day. The Elver entered service in 2008, is the newest of Thompson River Transport's four barges and is able to carry 15 tonnes more than her sister vessels Pike Perch and Chub. http://www.torbayseaways.co.uk/20.html

Dist:0.4km<br/>Looking north-west across the large expanse of the ham towards Upton upon Severn and most of the Malvern Hills range beyond. Often flooded in the winter at times of high river levels, the ham provides good grazing in the summer months.

Dist:0.5km<br/>A petroleum depot was built near Ripple on the River Severn early in WW2. Supplies were initially delivered by rail and coastal tanker up the River Severn from Gloucester. Later Ripple was fed by the pipeline built 1941-42 between Avonmouth and Liverpool.This pipeline was later connected post D-day to PLUTO. Of strategic importance, the site was designated as the 'Saxon's Lode defended locality'. Now long disused, the grass covered storage tanks can be still be seen in the background. The oblong pillbox in the right foreground is a variant with an internal anti-ricochet wall and a low open entrance. It is of brick construction with a concrete roof and 6 embrasures primarily defending the site from attack from the nearby river.
