The River Kenwater beneath the bridge is a short tributary of the River Lugg that flows a short distance further north. There is a bench mark on the low stone parapet near this end of the railings - [[2540448]]

In draining the wetland, the river was forced into two channels, this one, Kenwater running through the town (Broad Street crosses by the bridge in the background). Another branch, more a flood relief system, runs around the town to the north.
