Dist:0.4km north<br/>Tegryn is a small, mainly agricultural community, high in the Preseli hills, with a pub, post office, two garages, chapel and an area primary school in the village. Within living memory that the village contained, in addition, 4 shops, 2 tailors, a seamstress, a cobbler, an egg trader, a bus proprietor, and in close proximity to the village – a woollen mill and a blacksmith. Nevertheless, even with reduced amenities it remains a thriving centre of local rural life. The garage on the left in the image looks as if it hasn't changed much in recent decades; the pub is straight ahead. The road leads north in the direction of Cardigan. Dist:0.7km east<br/>The Afon Cneifa in the valley at the bottom of the field is the boundary between Clydau's two divisions: Islawr-llan on this side and Uwchlawr-llan on the other. The farm among the trees across the valley is Cwm-hir.

Dist:0.9km southwest<br/>Slate extraction probably started here in a small way at the end of the C18 but output only picked up in the 1820s and 30s. It grew substantially during the second half of the C19, peaking in 1873 when 80 men were employed, producing 2000 tons of slate a year. It was also in 1873 that the railway finally opened, with the purpose of easing the transport out. Production slowed down in the C20 and the quarry was worked by a local syndicate until it closed in 1926.

Dist:0.9km south<br/>Hieracium aurantiacum is a bright red member of the daisy family (probably introduced) that likes very well drained sites. It is often to be found growing in the gravel on or around graves in a burial ground such as here at Llwnyrhwrdd chapel.

Dist:0.9km south<br/>Many of the C19 gravestones behind Llwynyrhrwrdd chapel (see [[516143]])have, like this one, the word 'colofn', meaning column or pillar, at the top, others have the words 'maen' or 'beddfaen', meaning stone or gravestone. Yet all are of very similar size and design. I haven't come across this before and have no idea why it occurs here. If anyone can throw any light on it I would be very interested.

Dist:1.0km south<br/>This 1879 chapel near Tegryn had separate doors for men and women. For such a magnificent edifice in such a splendid setting, it seems a shame to have used plastic replacements.

Dist:1.0km south<br/>This large chapel stands a short distance south of Tegryn and overlooks Cwm-yr-aur/valley of gold. Ranks of closely packed gravestones stand in rows behind the chapel - perhaps relocated from lower down. The present chapel dates from 1874 although worship began here in 1805. The congregation would have been swollen by large numbers of people drawn to the area by silver-lead mining and slate quarrying. The name Llwyn-yr-hwrdd means Grove of the Ram.

Dist:1.0km southwest<br/>Looking east along the floor of the quarry - there were in fact two quarries but they appear to have merged. The weighbridge is probably for use by lorries taking out stone and rubble from the spoil heaps.

Dist:1.3km southwest<br/>The bridge crosses the Taf: the quarry is on this (northern) side of the valley, the hamlet on the southern bank, as was the railway line which crossed the road between the bridge and this house.

Dist:1.3km southwest<br/>This is all that remains of the halt at Glogue. It appears to have been incorporated into a private garden but the old platform is clearly visible. The Whitland & Taf Vale Railway was incorporated on 1 July 1869 to extend its line to Crymych. The Engineer was James Weekes Szlumper of Aberystwyth. The line opened to Glogue on 24 March 1873 and to Crymych in October 1874; in both cases for freight. Passenger services had to wait until 12 July 1875. The line was closed in 1962.
