Dist:0.5km north<br/>The station was opened by the London & South Western Railway in 1863 on the newly constructed branch line from Twickenham to Kingston. In 1869 this line was extended to New Malden where it joined the LSWR main line to Southampton, thereby giving Teddington a service to and from Waterloo in both directions. Meanwhile a branch line to Shepperton was opened in 1864 from a point just to the north of Teddington. All lines serving Teddington were electrified in 1916. Trains to Waterloo in both directions and to Shepperton from platform 1 still serve the station.

On the right of the picture is the restored Victorian theatre built by Dr Langdon Down for the use of the patients. To the left the former hospital workshops which have re-developed as social housing.

Dist:0.8km east<br/>The theatre is on the site of Normansfield Hospital which was a self sufficient Victorian hospital complex run by Dr John Langdon Down. Access to the theatre was with the kind permission of The Langdon Down Centre Trust in whose care the theatre building, together with the original scenery, has been restored to its former glory.
