This arch and another one close to it fulfilled a purely structural function, keeping the railway (to the right) and the mill (to the left) apart from each other. The railway had closed n 1966, long before this 1990 photograph.

Dist:0.1km<br/>This chimney stands on the hill side opposite the Helmshore Textile Museum.
The reason it is on the hill side is because in steep sided valleys the air flow can be very peculiar and the solution was to get the top of the chimney high enough to be in clean flowing air.
It was cheaper to build a long flue under the road and up the hill side to a short chimney rather than build a tall stack in the valley bottom.
