Dist:0.3km north<br/>I haven't seen this kind of gate before. The galvanised arms are hinged at the bottom and can be moved outwards, slackening the chains. Made by British Gates & Timber Ltd, Biddenden, Kent.

Dist:0.6km north<br/>Only these sloes, scrub, nettles and a few broken slabs are now to be seen on the site of Mud Farm, which would have been to the right of this footpath. It must have been demolished perhaps 15 to 20 years ago. I spoke to a local who said he knew the man who demolished it but not when.

Dist:0.7km north<br/>This is a blackboard. The notice invites visitors to the Hampshire County Council run park to write their own comments on the board. There was, however, no chalk to be seen.

Dist:1.1km northeast<br/>The date at the top of this old wall is 1593. The plaque below marks the route of the Pilgrimage from Winchester to Canterbury in A.D.2000. The milestone refers to the Domesday Book when, in A.D.1085, the population was 65. Another face records a similar population for A.D.2000.

Dist:1.1km northeast<br/>Avington House, an old mansion, sits in its own park on the banks of the River Itchen. This is famous, and expensive, fishing country in the Hampshire Downs. The purple flowers are the common fireweed (rose bay willow herb) which often grow first on burnt land.

Dist:1.1km southwest<br/>This is the highest point of this footpath which is passing across the line of view. The copse in the background is in SU5230 and is unnamed. There is a mobile phone mast in it.
