Many years ago at the start of World War 2 my Gran my Mother and then little me came to Llwydiarth to avoid the expected German bombs. We stayed at my Gran's brothers house, Cainant Coch, who was called Charlie Taylor. Gran was called Alice Westray and mother was Kathleen Allison. I remember going to the little school, which is now the home of hay and birds, and being taught in the Welsh language. A lovely girl, I think that her name was Doreen, used to collect me at the gate and escort me to school. I recall that the shop was called Rickets and was the centre of the village.
At the same time my cousin Sheila and her mother Marjorie Stebbings stayed with my Aunti Dot and Uncle Jack Worthington at a house called the Warren. As I recall we used to access it over a little bridge.
At a time when food was particularly scarce Uncle Charlie kept us well fed because as a Gamekeeper we lived well on rabbit pie.
I have wonderful memories of my time in llwydiarth all those years ago in 1940.

Her name was Margaret Roberts and she was from Garthbeibio. She married a scotsman Tom Askew who was my grandfather. I am 61 now and have lived in New Zealand most of my life. I'd be interested to learn about my grans place of birth etc
A blog about the Parish of Maesbury.
There is a seperate History Blog for the Parish.
A potted history of the Parish of Maesbury. A very boring place with a very interesting history and a unique purpose built canal village and inland port.
