Dist:0.7km<br/>These cottages can also be seen - at a certain distance - in [[2223482]]. The blue-grey and brown stone from which they are built is plainly of local origin - is it Mountsorrel granite ? The window and door surrounds (of brick) are extremely neat, probably the result of recent refurbishment. To me, the contrasts in texture and colour are very appealing. The roof is worth a close look: the slates grade in size from large, just above the eaves, to tiny, up by the ridge of the roof - quite a work of art.

Dist:0.7km<br/>This area of Leicestershire has a long history of quarrying. Swithland itself was famous for producing slate, much used for tombstones in the 18th century - fine examples can be seen at Breedon-on-the-Hill, Croxton Kerrial, and Grantham. Many cottages along this road are built of local stone. The cottage nearest the camera appears to have been extended quite recently, using materials which closely match those of the older buildings. With a few years of weathering this will blend in perfectly.
