Surrey Quays is on the East London Line in Rotherhithe near Surrey Quays Shopping Centre and Southwark Park. The next station to the north is Canada Water, and to the south it splits into two branches, which lead to the southern termini, New Cross Gate and New Cross. The East London Line Project is planned to extend and upgrade the existing line, converting it into a new metro-style (National Rail) train service, with services that will ultimately extend North to Highbury & Islington, South to West Croydon and West to Clapham Junction.

Surrey Quays is a strange station, half of it being beneath a road bridge. Here an East London line train is seen just after departing for Whitechapel.

Someone has made a laudable attempt to brighten up this old station, which is half-covered by a road bridge, by painting the pillars orange, red and white.

The bleak South Bermondsey station, photographed from a train between New Cross Gate and London Bridge. This station is still open in 2007, but the lines which pass beneath the girder bridge, which went to the Bricklayer's Arms goods depot, have long gone.

In 1979 the landscape of south-east London was changing fast as old industrial premises were being demolished to make way for new decelopment. In this picture the old South Metroploitan gas works can be seen in the right background, while the building being demolished will make way for a new football ground for Millwall FC to replace their old ground at Coldblow Lane, not far away.

Dist:1.0km north<br/>Former Mill, named after the nearby Thames Tunnel, the first tunnel of the modern age, and the first under the Thames. The tunnel was built by Marc Isambard Brunel at a cost of ten lives and £614,000. It was completed on the third attempt - the first ran into quicksand and out of money, the second failed after the Thames broke in twice. The third attempt took fifteen years, was a national joke, and was only rescued by repeated additional money from the Government. It was completed on 4 April 1840, and opened by Queen Victoria on 27 January 1843.

Dist:1.0km north<br/>A plaque on this school says it was founded by Peter Hill and Robert Bell in 1613, Charity School instituted 1742, removed here 1797. The building is across St Marychurch Street from the church.

Dist:1.0km north<br/>Taken from the church yard. Church built in 1715, paid for by the seamen and watermen of the parish, to replace a crumbling mediaeval church. The Mayflower sailed from Rotherhithe in 1620, and the Master, Captain Jones, is buried in the churchyard.
